Racism is a public health crisis that causes deep harm. People’s Community Clinic stands against racism and discrimination in our own work and in the community we serve. We recognize that racism is pervasive in our society and that no segment of our nation is exempt. The traumas experienced by communities of color are real and must be openly recognized and addressed.
We acknowledge the long history of racism in medicine and injustices in healthcare stemming from race and its intersection with other social identities that we have not adequately confronted. People’s Community Clinic condemns racism of any kind and commits to the institutional change necessary to dismantle systems that perpetuate injustice. Knowing that words are powerful when coupled with action, we join with all advocates calling for meaningful change within the healthcare system and our nation.
We will take the following actions to embed fairness and anti-racist actions into our work as a health care organization:
- Work with a consultant to help us identify how systemic racism impacts the healthcare system.
- Identify and offer on-going related training.
- Evaluate and address health outcomes among our patients and in the community we serve.
- Continue personal and professional development in how to be anti-racist through various avenues.
- Listen to and elevate under represented voices in conversations with patients and colleagues.
We hold each other accountable to remain open to criticism and critique in our efforts to pursue anti-racist work. We recognize that this is a work in progress with no quick fixes, and we are committed to this work for the long-haul.
